The Institute of Musicology SAS was among the founding institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and Arts, established in 1943, and has been part of the Slovak Academy of Sciences since its foundation in 1953. It conducts basic research in the field of musicology, encompassing all three of its principal disciplines: historical musicology, ethnomusicology, and selected areas of systematic musicology.
