General Instructions

Musicologica Slovaca publishes original studies and articles that fall within the journal’s thematic scope and have not been published previously.

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically to the editorial office at: musicologica.slovaca@savba.sk. Contributions intended for publication in the first issue of a given calendar year must be submitted by the end of March; those intended for publication in the second issue must be submitted by mid-September.

Prior to submission, authors should ensure that their manuscript has neither been published previously nor submitted to another journal for consideration. By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that their work is original and that its publication has been approved by all co-authors, where applicable, as well as by the relevant bodies of the institution in which the contribution was produced.

Authors bear full responsibility for the content of their submissions, the accuracy of the data, and the validity of any research findings. They must ensure that permissions for the publication of data have been obtained from all relevant parties.

Authors who include images, graphs, tables, musical examples, or excerpts from previously published works must obtain permission from the relevant copyright holder(s) and provide evidence of such permission upon submission. In the absence of such evidence, the material will be considered the original work of the author.

Contributors must ensure that only individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the submitted manuscript are listed as authors or co-authors. Conversely, all individuals who have made a substantial contribution to the submitted work must be acknowledged as authors.

The acceptance or rejection of submitted manuscripts is determined by the editorial board on the basis of reports from independent reviewers. The peer-review process is double-blind.

Manuscripts may be submitted in either Slovak or English, including the abstract, keywords, and résumé for the section Studies, and the abstract and keywords for the section Materials.

The journal distinguishes the following categories of contributions according to the treatment of their content:

• studies (focusing on the treatment of a specific topic);
• material-based contributions (focusing on the treatment of materials);
• reviews of scholarly and professional publications.

The editorial office reserves the right to assign a submitted manuscript to the section Studies or Materials as appropriate.

Authors are required to provide DOI identifiers for all cited sources for which they are available.

Authors are also encouraged to provide their ORCID identifiers.

Formal Requirements for Contributions

Manuscripts must be submitted in Microsoft Word format. The text should be written in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with 1.5 line spacing and margins of 2.5 cm at the top, bottom, left, and right.

The length of contributions is not strictly prescribed. For submissions to the section Studies, the minimum length is 36,000 characters including spaces. For submissions to the section Materials, the minimum length is 14,400 characters including spaces. Contributions must include an abstract of no more than 15 lines, 3–5 keywords, and a résumé of no more than 2,700 characters including spaces. A bibliography must be included at the end of the manuscript (see the instructions below), and all references must be cited in footnotes. Contributions submitted to the section Reviews must not exceed 21,600 characters including spaces. Italics should be used in the main text for titles of sources, musical works, publications, and incipits of song texts. Quotations in the main text may be presented, at the discretion of the author, either within quotation marks or as indented block quotations.

Notes and bibliographical references within the text must be inserted on the relevant page using the “Insert Footnote” function.

Authors are required to provide DOI identifiers for all cited sources for which they are available.

Images and musical examples must be accompanied by an appropriate source citation.

Manuscripts should be structured as follows:

• title of the contribution (in bold);
• author’s contact details (first name(s) and surname, academic titles, institutional affiliation, institutional address, e-mail address);

• author’s international identifier (ORCID);
• abstract, keywords;
• main text;
• note / attribution of the contribution to a research-project, presented as a separate paragraph following the main text;

• bibliography;
• appendices;
• summary (for contributions submitted to the section Studies).

References to literature should be provided in footnotes. The form of the references must correspond to the entries in the bibliography appended to the manuscript.

General Notes

• If the place of publication, year of publication, or publisher is not indicated in the source, use b. m., b. r., or b. v., respectively.
• If a source lists several places of publication and publishers, each publisher should be linked to the corresponding place of publication and separated by a semicolon and a space: Bratislava : Ústav hudobnej vedy SAV; Prešov : Prešovský hudobný spolok Súzvuk, 2008.
• If several places of publication and only one publisher are listed, the places of publication should be separated by a semicolon and a space: Bratislava; Martin : Osveta, 1957.
• Page ranges should be indicated using a hyphen.
• The data in the bibliographical description of the cited source should be given in the language of the source up to and including the page numbers. A translation of the title may be added in square brackets.
• In bilingual or multilingual titles, the individual language versions should be separated by a slash.
• The abbreviation for page or pages is s. Journal volumes and issue numbers of co-authored volumes should be given in Arabic numerals. In the case of numbered series, the series number should be provided in addition to the pages.

Manuscripts that do not comply with these guidelines may be returned to the author.

Only manuscripts that meet the journal’s quality standards and fall within the scope of Musicologica Slovaca will be considered for peer review.
